At Avondale Pattillo you have many different ways to serve others.
Some call this area "Missions", others prefer to call it "Outreach". Here are a few ways to directly affect the lives of others:
Join in outreach into the local community or the region:
Some of the many Missions efforts we have supported in the past few years:
DEAM Food Pantry
Church members donate non-perishable food items and funds to the Decatur Area Emergency Assistance Ministry (DEAM).
DEAM also gives rental and utility assistance.
Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM)
"DCM alleviates and prevents homelessness while affirming the dignity of each family."
Our church is a participating member of the interdenominational Decatur Cooperative Ministry. DCM is a faith-based nonprofit organization supported by over 35 congregations from 14 denominations. It provides a range of services for homeless and at-risk families to help them become self-sufficient. DCM also gives rental and utility assistance. We have supported DCM's Hagar's House for years. Church members also contribute clothes when called upon by DCM.
Disaster relief funds, goods
Our church takes special collections of funds for disasters, both at home and abroad. These funds support the victims of such disasters as tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. Other local family disasters (fire, for example) also bring out the generosity of our members.
Members: Need a helping hand? Able to lend a hand? Contact us. Our team of helpful people will contact you.
Imagine No Malaria
We support the global campaign to fight Malaria by supporting Imagine No Malaria. The campaign not only provides treated bed nets, but funds treatment and education. Though our original efforts were though a "Nothing But Nets" fund raising team, we now support the broader Imagine No Malaria effort.
Operation Christmas Child (Shoebox Ministry)
We participate in providing decorated shoe boxes filled with items for needy children. We also help process shoe boxes at the southeast processing center in the Atlanta area. This is a worldwide outreach and evangelism ministry of Samaritan's Purse.
We support the annual Warm-Up Sunday in October by providing new or gently used garments such as jackets for people in need of them.
Re: Loom Tour Pics
On March 13, 2014, thirteen members & friends of APUMC had a wonderful tour of Re:Loom Re:Loom "employs and empowers homeless and low-income individuals through weaving beautifully-designed products our of upcycled materials. Proceeds support weavers' salaries and the initiative for Affordable Housing to reduce homelessness in Atlanta." It is simply amazing what can be down with old clothes and even "upcycled" plastic grocery bags. Thank you so much to Marty Aron and the Missions Work Area for organizing the event.
We will be collecting clothing items to donate to Re:Loom through the end of March. During your "spring cleaning" look through your closets and laundry rooms for items to donate. :-)
